We made it! After a long journey of wanting to start a blog 5 years ago when I first started urban sketching, to now when I've accumulated the sketchbooks, the experience, and a little more of “the time”, the moment has finally come when I am truly prepared to take on this blog.
Five years ago, I started urban sketching, and I've taken periodic breaks when I really didn’t feel much inspiration to sketch, but I would never stop for good. It's a calming activity that I use to express my creativity, and to improve on what I've done in the past.
Why should you listen to this website?
I aim for my blog to be a great resource for artists, illustrators, urban sketchers, students, and everyone alike. I believe I can provide a different look at urban sketching then most other similar blogs out there mainly because of my age. I feel like there are so few young urban sketchers out there that blog and provide this entirely different outlook on the whole experience. I'm here to fill the void!
We need more exposure of urban sketchers to young students in my opinion because they have the most to gain from this. A daily sketchbook is already something that many people do but have you ever had people judge these sketches? No, it won't be the end of the world if someone says something negative about your work, but my personal belief is that these sketches show a story of development through art. I notice this in myself every time I find an old sketchbook in the closet.
What is urban sketching?
The short answer is it's drawing on location.
The long answer is it's drawing a scene on location that you have not put together (so it's not a still life) and generally done in a sketchbook. It can involve details of a scene, such as just one musician at a concert, or it can involve the whole scene, such as the whole stage with all the activity happening atop it.
Many cities also have gatherings of urban sketchers to bring them together for sketchwalks which are just arranged walks with designated sketching locations. This is not to say that you can't go on your own planned sketchwalk. The urban sketchers community has a large following on blogs, Facebook, Instagram, and all other forms of social media. It's a very welcoming community! So please come back to learn more through my blog and website!
